Why not invest in yourself and enjoy a beautiful smile for many years to come?
Today’s braces are not only for children or adolescents! Everyone can hope to have nice straight teeth and benefit from the numerous advantages that this may bring. It is well known that, if left untreated, many orthodontic problems will only worsen with time.
- Crooked and crowded teeth are more difficult to clean and may indirectly lead to caries and gum disease and even to tooth loss.
- Healthy teeth can be moved, corrected and aligned practically at any age, as long as the supporting bone and gingiva are also healthy.
- Today, 25% of orthodontic patients are adults.
- The advent of smaller esthetic brackets, Invisalign® clear aligners as well as the new generation of lingual “invisible” iBraces®, make treatment more accessible than ever.
- As an adult, orthodontic corrections may have a significant impact on your facial appearance, your self-confidence, the function of your dentition and your dental health.
Adults vs Teenagers: The difference
Many orthodontic problems can be treated as easily in adults as in younger patients. Here are some facts about adult orthodontics:
- Additional risks may be occasionally associated with adult treatment but, in most cases, excellent results can still be achieved.
- Since adults have completed their growth, in the presence of significant skeletal imbalance between the jaws, a surgery to one or both jaws may be necessary to restore a proper relationship between the upper and lower teeth.
- In certain cases, “compromised” treatments, aimed at correcting only certain aspects of a malocclusion, may be considered and still offer significant esthetic and functional improvements.
- Adults have more gum problems and bone loss around their teeth (periodontal diseases) than the adolescent population.
- They may also have root canal treatments, heavily restored teeth, dental implants and other dental prosthesis (crowns, bridges, partial dentures).
- Treating such cases in orthodontics is possible but requires special care and treatment planning.
- The Damon® technique and protocols used in our practice are particularly well suited to treat adults. The lighter forces used, the greater ease in cleaning the appliances, the lower discomfort level, the frequency of visits and the shorter treatment time compared to conventional methods of treatment make this technique ideal for treating adults.
- The use of the new mini-screws to provide additional anchorage allows us to offer diferent treatment options which were not available just a few years ago.
- Adults frequently have dentitions that have been “mutilated” by the removal of some teeth. They also present more tooth wear, damaged and heavily restored teeth as well as bone and gum problems around the teeth. These conditions can increase the complexity of the orthodontic treatment. In such cases, it may be necessary to work in collaboration with your general dentist and other dental specialists to elaborate the best treatment plan allowing you to benefit from all areas of modern dentistry.
