- White spots on teeth are not always decalcifications caused by poor oral hygiène.
- They sometimes occur naturally or may result from taking certain products such as fluoride.
- Too much fluoride can cause dental fluorosis which is characterized by the appearance of stains on teeth.
- Taking certain medications during the tooth formation period can also affect the color and texture of teeth. The critical period for fluoride exposure is between the ages of 1 and 4

(A) Example of fluorosis in a 16 year old girl. (B) Her 14 year old brother shows similar white spots BEFORE orthodontic treatment.

Other examples of "natural" white spots (not fluorosis) affecting anterior teeth in people who have not had orthodontic treatment. Although it can be a cosmetic problem, the quality of the teeth is not affected by this difference in color.
