I want to raise a question about qualification of an orthodontist. On websites, I found a few orthodontists who earned their specialization from IDI (the International Dental Institute) instead of universities. My question is can we, patients, rely on their skill to fix a very complex case?

Treating complex orthodontic cases
In all honesty, I think it is for the individual orthodontist to decide which type of case he/she wants to tackle. Even among certified orthodontic specialists, there are many who prefer not to treat certain types of cases such as adult cases, severely mutilated cases, periodontally involved cases, surgical cases, etc.

Orthodontic training
The orthodontic training one can get from different “institutes” or continuing education establishments such as the IDI (Institut Dentaire International) is very different than that obtained in post-graduate University programs lasting 2-3 years of full time schooling and training and leading to a certification in orthodontics. Furthermore, there is more than the educational aspect which must be taken into consideration. The clinical experience of an orthodontist can play a big role in the ability of a practitioner to treat complex cases. There is a difference between a clinician having treated a few 100 cases and another one having treated many thousands.

Orthodontic websites
A short answer to the question as to why some orthodontists don’t have a website would be because of the cost and “trouble” (work) involved in building a website.
Having a website or not is a personal “preference” for each orthodontist. There are different philosophies among practitioners regarding this matter. As you can imagine, building and maintaining an extensive website like ours requires time, resources and a certain expertise to update it regularly by adding new content. Not every one likes to do that or is willing to spend the time doing it. It so happens that we like doing this and have a lot resources and extensive digital material (photographs, cases, illustrations, etc.) that we can share with our readers.

If you surf the Net to look at orthodontic websites, you will realize that the content varies a lot from one website to the next. Some just describe basic services offered by their practice while others have extensive material about orthodontics and even blogs. Again, a personal choice for each orthodontist.
